FUSE NEWS

The Story Behind Fuse Lenses

Almost 15 years ago, a local firefighter named Carlos had a problem. His sunglasses were scratched, again, and he didn’t want to toss them out or spend another couple hundred bucks replacing the whole thing. His frames still fit great, and they still looked good. They just needed new lenses. So, he asked a couple of friends “Can’t I just replace the lenses?” As it turns out, that question was the beginning of Fuse.

A Practical Idea

Carlos brought that question to two people who happened to be the right ones to ask: Brandon Dill and Jon Martino. At the time, Brandon and Jon had years of experience working in prescription optical labs. They already knew how to cut lenses, work with precision equipment, and match lenses to different frame styles. The idea of replacing non prescription sunglass lenses, what’s called “plano” lenses, wasn’t exactly common back then. You couldn’t just walk into a store and get it done, and most people didn’t realize it was even an option. But with their background, Brandon and Jon figured they could make it work. So they gave it a shot. They helped Carlos swap out his lenses, and it worked. The scratch was gone, the frames stayed the same, and the sunglasses were as good as new. That one fix turned into a few more. Then a few more after that. Before long, word started spreading.

Trial And Error

Like most things, things started out simple. The first few lens replacements were done with just the basics, hands on tools, a lot of measuring, and trial and error. But as more people started asking for lens swaps, friends, coworkers, locals who heard about it through word of mouth, Brandon and Jon knew it was time to take things further. They began researching plano lens manufacturing and refining their process. They tested different materials, looked into coatings, learned how to handle lenses for all kinds of frame shapes, and made the setup more efficient. The goal was never to become a massive operation overnight, it was just about solving a problem in a better way. And over time, that practical fix turned into a full on business.

Listening to Our Customers

From the beginning, Fuse has always been shaped by what our customers are looking for. We started because someone asked a question, and we’ve grown by continuing to listen to the people who wear our lenses every day. A lot of the features we now offer, like polarized options, mirrored finishes, color enhancing lenses, and prescription upgrades, came from people asking, “Can you do this?” We just kept answering yes, and we kept improving along the way. We call our community the Fuse Squad, and that’s not just a label. Whether it’s feedback, requests, or stories from people who wear our lenses while hiking, fishing, biking, or working outdoors, it all helps shape what we build next.

What Makes Fuse Different

We’re not the only ones out there making lenses, but we do things a little differently. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • We make lenses for thousands of frames: From big name brands to smaller niche styles, we’ve built up a huge catalog of models we can cut lenses for.

  • Everything’s done in house: We cut every lens right here in our hometown of Clearwater, Florida. That means more control over quality and faster turnaround times.

  • We’re not trying to sell you new sunglasses: Our whole goal is to help you keep the pair you already like, just with better, clearer lenses.

  • We offer prescription lenses too: If you love your sunglasses but need vision correction, we make prescription replacements for many frames as well.

  • We believe in doing things the right way: That means quality materials, solid customer support, and keeping the process as simple as possible.

Even though we’ve grown over the years, our approach is still the same, replace the part that’s broken, and keep the stuff that still works. Scratched lenses shouldn’t mean the end of your favorite pair of sunglasses. If anything, that mindset has only become more relevant. These days, more people are thinking about ways to reduce waste, get more life out of what they already own, and avoid spending money when they don’t have to. We’re proud to be part of that solution, and we’re always working on ways to make the process even easier.
